The MBPD Traffic team is an all volunteer unit reporting to the Traffic Bureau of the City of Manhattan Beach Police Department. The team provides traffic management support for community events and law enforcement operations. The team has almost 50 active members, a force larger than the sworn compliment of the police department. Team members are trained to organize and manage major traffic events up to complete area shutdowns and stands ready to augment police resources in the event of a major disaster or other emergency.

  • Team members have served an average of five years with the department with the most experienced members involved for over a decade.
  • Most posess amateur radio operators licenses and key team members have control operator authority over selected area amateur repeaters.
  • Many bring considerable business acumen and professional skills to their volunteering activity in between deployments.
  • All have passed police background checks prior to being accepted to the team.
  • Each attends annual training in traffic control techniques.

The recent term "Volunteers in Police Services" is a citizens involvement category of the Department of Homeland Security. The MBPD Traffic Volunteers service record precedes DHS by at least a decade.

If you are a resident of the South Bay and are interested in volunteering with the MBPD Traffic Volunteers, please contact volunteer coordinator Wendy Crawford for additional information. DUI Checkpoint Operations. DUI checkpoints are operated as part of the South Bay DUI Task Force, a multi-agency team consisting of the cities of Manhattan Beach, Hawthorne, Gardena, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, El Segundo, Rancho Palos Verdes as well as the El Camino Community College police, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol. Our team provides logistics support for the setting up and operation of the checkpoints. Note that a public notice with the date and location of the checkpoint is published in the local newspaper. This is required by law.

Operational Call-Outs. The team augments the resources of the police department during operations where either the scope or timeline of the incident exceeds the capacity of city staff. These call-outs most commonly occur in support of SWAT incidents, extended perimeter containments and major traffic incidents under both city specific and mutual aid scenarios. Our responsibilities involve assisting in the management of the outer perimeter so that police personnel can concentrate on matters interior to the containment zone. The team's perimeter may be the only interaction the public has in connection with the incident.
